Anna Akuluk Ashenfelter is a family, friend and neighbor caregiver in Nome, Alaska.

"When I care for children, I encourage families to send homemade meals whenever they can. Leftovers from home help children stay connected to their family's cooking and traditions. One little boy I cared for often arrived with musk ox soup or spaghetti made with musk ox. His family harvested much of their own food, and I loved seeing him enjoy meals that reflected his own culture. I try to honor each family's food traditions rather than replace them, which is one reason why I don’t use the Child and Adult Care Food Program. It requires a lot of paperwork and doesn’t align neatly with our traditional food practices."
